It takes 16 innings before Angels beat Mariners, 3-2

KEY MOMENT: Mike Trout doubled with one out in the bottom of the 16th inning and, after Albert Pujols grounded out to the pitcher and Josh Hamilton was intenionally walked, pinch-hitter Efren Navarro stroked reliever Dominic Leone’s first pitch into center field for the first walk-off hit of his career, a two-out single that gave the Angels their 20th win in 24 games. The 5-hour and 14-minute game was the 21st in club history of 16 innings or more. Hector Santiago threw 2 2/3 innings to get the win, capping 10 innings of scoreless relief for the Angels.

AT THE PLATE: The Angels scored twice in the fifth inning when Howie Kendrick singled and came home on David Freese’s double to right-center field. Robinson Cano’s one-hop relay to the plate beat Kendrick, but the ball squirted out of catcher Mike Zunino’s glove as he applied the tag. Freese took third on the error and scored on Hank Conger’s single to right.

ON THE MOUND: Jered Weaver pitched out of a runner-on-third, one-out jam in the fifth inning by striking out Brad Miller and getting Zunino to pop to second. He pitched out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the sixth when he struck out Justin Smoak looking at a tailing, 88-mph fastball. But he was pulled after giving up a leadoff double to Dustin Ackley and an RBI single to Miller in the seventh. Miller took second on a groundout and scored on Endy Chavez’s bloop single to center off Mike Morin. Kevin Jepsen, Joe Smith, Jason Grilli and Fernando Salas each threw scoreless innings for the Angels.

UPON FURTHER REVIEW: Cano doubled to right-center field to lead off the 10th inning, but Angels shortstop John McDonald kept his tag on the Seattle second baseman as Cano completed a pop-up slide that took him off the bag for a split second. The Angels challenged the call, and after a 58-second replay review, Cano was ruled out, virtually killing the Mariners’ rally.

AYBAR OUT: All-Star shortstop Erick Aybar, the player the Angels can least afford to lose after Mike Trout, injured his right groin breaking out of the box on his ninth-inning single and was pulled from the game. The severity of the injury was not immediately known.

ON THE BASES: Trout, after sliding head-first into second base on an eighth-inning double, was spiked when Cano stepped on Trout’s left hand. Trout winced in pain but remained in the game.

BONUS BABY: The Angels signed first-round pick Sean Newcomb, a University of Hartford left-hander who went 8-2 with a 1.25 earned-run average and 106 strikeouts last season, for $2.518 million on Friday, just hours before the deadline for teams to sign picks from the June draft. Newcomb will report to the team’s Arizona Summer League affiliate Sunday with a tentative plan to join Class-A Burlington (Iowa) in the Midwest League by the end of August.
