ANGELS REPORT

Chone Figgins comes off DL, but Erick Aybar goes on it

Figgins is activated after being sidelined most of May by a hamstring injury. Aybar, though, will be out at least two weeks because of a dislocated finger.

TORONTO–The Angels gained one infielder and lost another today when third baseman Chone Figgins was activated off the disabled list and shortstop Erick Aybar was placed on it.

Aybar dislocated his right pinkie finger while diving to stop Alex Rios’ first-inning grounder up the middle Tuesday night and was pulled from the game. His finger got stuck on the artificial turf, causing it to bend under his hand.

Though X-rays were negative, the injury was deemed severe enough to knock the slick-fielding Aybar, who is batting .203 this month after hitting .318 in April, out for at least two weeks. He will be eligible to come off the DL on June 6.

Figgins, the Angels’ leadoff batter, had been out since May 4 because of a right hamstring strain, an injury he suffered when his leg hit the umpire as he was sliding into home plate.

Aybar will be replaced at shortstop by Maicer Izturis, which means Sean Rodriguez will probably gain most of the playing time at second base until Aybar returns.
