Rangers’ Martin Perez might have Tommy John surgery

The Texas Rangers will meet with left-hander Martin Perez on Saturday to determine if the injured starter will undergo Tommy John surgery.

The 23-year-old Perez felt discomfort in his elbow in his most start last Saturday. An examination revealed inflammation, and he said this week he’s leaning toward having the procedure done.

Perez is 4-3 with a 4.38 earned-run average in eight starts after going 10-6 as a rookie. He’s 0-3 with a 13.15 ERA after consecutive shutouts.

The Rangers lost left-handed starter Matt Harrison this week because of a recurring back injury that forced him to miss most of last season. The 28-year-old Harrison hasn’t decided whether to undergo another back operation, one that would fuse disks together.

Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez has undergone Tommy John surgery as previously planned, ending the reigning NL rookie of the year’s season. Fernandez had the surgery in Los Angeles and will return to Miami to begin his rehabilitation program. Typical recovery time is 12 to 18 months. ... The Cleveland Indians have optioned right-hander Danny Salazar to triple-A Columbus after he struggled in eight starts this season. Salazar started last season’s wild-card playoff game. But he was 1-4 with a 5.53 ERA in 40 2/3 innings, giving up eight home runs.
