Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez has undergone Tommy John surgery as previously planned, ending the reigning NL rookie of the year's season. Fernandez had the surgery in Los Angeles and will return to Miami to begin his rehabilitation program. Typical recovery time is 12 to 18 months. ... The Cleveland Indians have optioned right-hander Danny Salazar to triple-A Columbus after he struggled in eight starts this season. Salazar started last season's wild-card playoff game. But he was 1-4 with a 5.53 ERA in 40 2/3 innings, giving up eight home runs.
