The Colorado Rockies placed Nolan Arenado on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, one day after he broke his left middle finger on a head-first slide into second base in Atlanta. The team recalled infielder Josh Rutledge from triple-A Colorado Springs (Colo.).
Arenado was hitting .305 with six homers and 28 runs batted in. A decision on surgery or other treatment options won't be made until the third baseman is examined by a specialist.
Charlie Culberson, who replaced Arenado on Friday, was at at third base Saturday. Meanwhile, outfielder Carlos Gonzalez missed his third straight start with a swollen left index finger.
Rutledge has played second base and shortstop this season. He was placed on the 15-day DL on May 2 with a viral infection, then was optioned to Colorado Springs on May 13.
The Baltimore Orioles addressed their lack of depth at catcher, acquiring Nick Hundley from the San Diego Padres on Saturday in a trade for left-handed reliever Troy Patton.
The 30-year-old Hundley hit .271 with a home run and three RBIs in 33 games with the Padres this season. The Orioles are without starting catcher Matt Wieters, who's on the disabled list with a strained right elbow. Surgery remains an option.
In seven seasons with San Diego, Hundley batted .238 with 47 homers and 195 RBIs in 510 games. He also has a .990 career fielding percentage and a 28% success rate in throwing out would-be base stealers. Baltimore had been using Steve Clevenger and Caleb Joseph behind the plate in Wieters' absence.
Patton was 0-1 with an 8.10 earned-run average in nine appearances with Baltimore. He missed April while serving a 25-game suspension for testing positive for a banned amphetamine last year.
The Orioles also received cash considerations from San Diego in the deal.
Shane Victorino on DL
The Boston Red Sox placed right fielder Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list for the second time this season. Both times it's been because of a strained right hamstring.
Outfielder Daniel Nava was recalled from triple-A Pawtucket (R.I.)
Manager John Farrell said Ortiz has a calf injury. Napoli is still feeling the flu-like symptoms that sidelined him Wednesday and Thursday in addition to hamstring, calf and finger issues.
In 21 games this season, Victorino hit .242 with one homer and 10 RBIs.
Reliever Kevin Siegrist's left forearm tightened up again after his latest outing, prompting the St. Louis Cardinals to put the reliever on the disabled list. Siegrist has made 23 appearances, tied for the team lead. He's 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in 20 innings. Left-hander Sam Freeman was called up from triple-A. ... Ivan Rodriguez hit a two-run homer to tie the score in the top of the sixth inning, and the Knucksies, representing the American League, and Wizards, for the National League, played to a 4-4 tie in the rain-shortened Hall of Fame Classic at Cooperstown, N.Y. The sixth annual classic at Doubleday Field also featured home runs by former major leaguers Hideki Matsui, Luis Gonzalez and Jack Wilson.
