Baseball notes: Arizona’s Paul Goldschmidt is out for the season

All-Sar first baseman Paul Goldschmidt of the Arizona Diamondbacks is going to miss the rest of the season because of a broken left hand, Manager Kirk Gibson said Sunday, two days after Goldschmidt was hit by a pitch from Pittsburgh reliever Ernesto Frieri.

Gibson put Goldschmidt’s rehabilitation timetable at eight weeks, and the season ends in late September. No surgery is expected. Goldschmidt hit .300 with 19 home runs and 69 runs batted in this season.

Test for Tanaka

New York Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka is scheduled to play catch Monday at Yankee Stadium, the first test for his injured right elbow since he received a platelet-rich plasma injection July 14. It could be a key moment for Tanaka, who hasn’t pitched since July 8 and hopes to avoid Tommy John surgery for a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament.

Pittsburgh All-Star outfielder Andrew McCutchen, last year’s National League most valuable player, left Sunday’s game at Arizona in the eighth inning because of discomfort in his left side. Before the game, the Pirates signed free agent infielder Jayson Nix, who was released by Tampa Bay last week and played for Philadelphia earlier this season. . . . Texas acquired first baseman-outfielder Mike Carp on a waiver claim from Boston and transferred pitcher Alexi Ogando from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL. . . . Minnesota claimed outfielder Jordan Schafer off waivers from Atlanta.
