Champ still has the moves Michael Schumacher a hack?

The seven-time Formula One champion was taking a cab ride in his native Germany when apparently he decided his driver wasn’t going fast enough.

No surprise there. Except Schumacher then asked the driver to slide over so he could take the wheel.

“It was sheer lunacy,” the cabby, Tuncer Yilmaz, told the Muenchener Abendzeitung newspaper. “He took the curves with full speed, but you couldn’t even notice it.”

The story sounds suspect, except Schumacher spokeswoman Sabine Kehm confirmed it to the Associated Press, adding that the driver had just arrived at the Coburg airport from Switzerland on Saturday.

“I was so nervous,” Yilmaz said, adding that Schumacher -- who retired after the 2006 season -- then gave him a tip of $146.72 on top of the $88.03 fare.

But Yilmaz said he had hoped for something more -- that German photo radar would have caught Schumacher speeding.

That photo, along with a speeding citation, would have been sent to Yilmaz, as the car’s owner.

“I would have gladly paid a ticket for that,” he said.

Locked up

Fans don’t often get to visit a pro football clubhouse, so the Baltimore Sun provided a glimpse of what some Ravens players keep in their lockers at the team’s training facility in Owings Mills, Md.

Tight end Daniel Wilcox, the team’s resident iPod expert, has a laptop to share more than 11,000 songs in his music library with teammates.

Wide receiver Demetrius Williams, from Concord, Calif., has a California license plate tacked to his locker.

Middle linebacker Ray Lewis has a yellow rubber duck on a shelf, and defensive tackle Dwan Edwards keeps sunflower seeds in his locker.

Offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden has a stack of books written by such authors as James Patterson and Clive Cussler.

Said Ogden, who has battled injuries this season: “When you’re on the training table as much as I’ve been this year unfortunately, you’ve got free time on your hands.”

Helped wanted

Top colleges fall all over themselves to land the best head coaches for their football teams. Then there’s Duke.

The Blue Devils, having won only 22 games in 13 years, posted on online ad for their new football coach.

The posting is on the university’s human resources website, right above an ad for a nursing assistant. The listing was posted Nov. 29, three days after former coach Ted Roof was fired.

Annual salary isn’t listed in the ad -- job requisition No. 400160742 -- but officials at the Durham, N.C., school said the opening was posted to comply with university job regulations.

Ad or no ad, former UCLA coach Karl Dorrell -- fired after the school’s loss to USC on Dec. 1 -- recently was spotted in a car on the Duke campus and is thought to be in contention for the Blue Devils job.

Join the parade

First the Dodgers announced that the team would enter its first-ever float in the Rose Parade in Pasadena on Jan. 1. Now, hockey fans will have a float to cheer as well.

The Stanley Cup, won by the Ducks, will be part of the city of Anaheim’s float, marking the cup’s first ride in the 119-year history of the famed parade.

Etruesports.com, a satiric website, took a poke at Bobby Petrino, who this week suddenly resigned as coach of the Atlanta Falcons -- after only 13 games -- to become football coach at Arkansas.

Under a story headlined “I Will Keep Moving Until Housing Crisis Is Over!” the website said Petrino, who has coached at other pro and college teams as well, committed to buy “yet another house, his fifth in the last five years,” to help the housing market.
