Clippers’ Blake Griffin limited by sprained knee

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — He tried.

As best he could, Blake Griffin tried to give the Clippers what he had, what he could summon in Game 7 of the Western Conference first-round series against the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday afternoon.

But Griffin’s knee wouldn’t cooperate the way he wanted it to, his sprained left knee refusing to hold up all game.

So Griffin gave the Clippers 28 minutes 17 seconds and eight points, four rebounds and two blocked shots.

“There just were movements I couldn’t do and I wanted to do,” Griffin said. “And I don’t want to ever put my teammates in a situation where I feel like I’m hurting them, where physically I can’t do what I need to do.”

Griffin played just 1:39 in the decisive fourth quarter.

He entered the fourth with 4:05 left and immediately turned the ball over. Soon after that, Griffin was replaced by Kenyon Martin.

Griffin said it was his idea “a little bit” to ask out of the game in the fourth.

“It was probably the way our second group was playing too,” Griffin said. “When I came back in, there was a play where I couldn’t do what I wanted to do physically. But I don’t want to dwell on that. My teammates did an unbelievable job. That’s a great feeling to get that first series win.”

The Clippers advanced to the second round of the playoffs and will play the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night.

Griffin was asked whether he would sit out the first game.

“No, I’m not going to sit out,” Griffin said. “It’s a matter of rest.”

Because Sunday’s Game 7 was at noon Central time and Game 1 against San Antonio is at 8:30 p.m. in the same time zone, Griffin said he’ll get about 1 1/2 days to rest and treat the injury.

“Really, these last two games, we haven’t had as much rest as we’re about to have now,” Griffin said. “So hopefully this rest kind of helps somehow by Tuesday. I mean, I’ll be ready to play.”

Playoff tickets go on sale

The Clippers will start selling Western Conference semifinals tickets for Games 3 (Saturday) and 4 (Sunday) against the Spurs on Monday.

Season-ticket holders can purchase presale single-game tickets at 1 p.m. Monday, and single-game ticket presale for partial plan holders will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Single-game tickets go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ticketmaster.com, Clippers.com or by calling 1-800-4NBATIX.

Radio deal reached

The Clippers and KFWB (980) will continue their relationship after the announcement of a multiyear broadcast deal for the news talk radio station to carry all of the team’s exhibition, regular-season and postseason games.
