Shooting guard J.J. Redick is expected to be sidelined six to eight weeks because of a broken bone in his right hand and a torn ligament in the side of his right wrist, the Clippers announced Sunday before their game against Indiana at Staples Center.

The team said Redick, injured during Friday’s game against Sacramento, will be reevaluated Monday by Dr. Steve Shin, a hand specialist, to determine whether he’ll need surgery.

“The ligament looks intact,” Redick said. “They shouldn’t have to operate on that. But just depending on what the fragments are in the bone, maybe you have to have a little cleaning out with that tomorrow. But we’ll see.”

Redick is averaging 15.8 points, tied with Jamal Crawford for third on the team, and is shooting 46% from the field this season. He has made 33 of 92 three-point attempts (35.9%) in 17 games.

“Obviously [the injury] takes out something that has been huge for us offensively,” Coach Doc Rivers said. “J.J.’s movement is an offense in itself. And we’re setting up a lot of offense off his movement to get something else. So he’s one of those guys, when he goes out, it changes a lot of what we do and so we’re going to have to do it on the run. We don’t have a lot of time to prepare for the non-J.J. minutes, going out on the road right now.”

Redick, 29, said he has broken the same hand three times before, at the ages of 7, 13 and 22.

Now he is bracing himself for another comeback.

“I have enjoyed these 17 games that I got to play in immensely,” Redick said. “I love this team and I love playing for Doc. So it’s very frustrating. But I’m an optimistic person and I look for the good in every situation and I’ve already started thinking about all the positive two months from now. So, mentally, I’ll be fine.”

Redick has found one positive already: It’s an upper-body injury, so he’ll be able to stay in shape and should be fresh when he returns.

“While most guys’ legs will be tailing off toward the end of January, I’ll have fresh legs,” he said. “And then a couple of the coaches said it’ll be like we’ve traded for someone right before the All-Star break. I’m hoping I have five more months of basketball to play this season.”

Redick said that his hand still was swollen and that there still was some pain.

Redick was injured in the second quarter Friday. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound guard was in midair when he collided with 6-11, 270-pound Kings center DeMarcus Cousins. Redick fell hard to the court, landing on his back.

Willie Green, who started in place of Redick, had two points on one-for-five shooting in Sunday’s 105-100 loss to the Pacers. He played just under 15 minutes.
