No. 2 Kentucky beats No. 5 Duke, 74-63, in men’s basketball

Tyler Ulis had 18 points and six assists, and No. 2 Kentucky used its speed and athleticism to hold off No. 5 Duke for a 74-63 victory Tuesday night in Chicago.

Kentucky forced 16 turnovers and outscored Duke, 18-4, in fast-break points. Jamal Murray scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half, and Isiah Briscoe added 12 points as the Wildcats (3-0) placed four players in double figures.

Amile Jefferson led the Blue Devils (2-1) with 16 points and 15 rebounds, and Marshall Plumlee finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots.

Grayson Allen, who scored 54 points in Duke’s first two games, was held to six points on two-for-11 shooting. He got his first basket on a three-point shot from the corner with 12:08 left in the second half.

Spurred on by a pro-Kentucky crowd, the Wildcats grabbed control with a 10-2 run early in the second half. Murray kicked it off with a layup and a dunk, and Skal Labisserie’s layup made it 49-38 with 14:48 left.

John Calipari’s team was never really challenged again. The Wildcats opened their biggest lead of the game when Ulis converted a layup to make it 71-55 with 4:09 to go.

at No. 3 Maryland 75, Georgetown 71: Rasheed Sulaimon hit a three-point shot with 1:18 left to break a tie, and the Terrapins (2-0) got 24 points from Melo Trimble in a rousing victory over the Hoyas (0-2).

No. 8 Oklahoma 84, at Memphis 78: Buddy Hield, a preseason All-American, scored 30 points to lead the Sooners in their season opener. Oklahoma earned its first victory over Memphis (1-1) in seven tries, outscoring the Tigers 9-2 in the final 1:38. Freshman forward Dedric Lawson had 22 points and 15 rebounds for Memphis.

at Tulsa 77, No. 9 Wichita State 67: Shaquille Harrison scored 20 points and Marquel Curtis added 16 to help the Golden Hurricane (2-0) overcome three years of frustration against the Shockers (1-1), who had won a school-record seven straight in the long-running series. Ron Baker scored 23 points for Wichita State, but all-conference guard Fred VanVleet, hobbled by a sprained ankle and sore hamstring, only scored 11.

at No. 11 Villanova 87, Nebraska 63: The Wildcats (2-0) rolled over the Cornhuskers (1-1) as Josh Hart scored 19 points and Daniel Ochefu had 17 points and 10 rebounds.

at No. 18 Notre Dame 86, Milwaukee 78: Demetrius Jackson scored 20 points, and V.J. Beachem tied a career high with 19 while adding a career-best eight rebounds for the Fighting Irish (2-0). All five starters scored in double figures for Notre Dame. Akeem Springs matched his career high with 21 points for the Panthers (3-1).

at No. 19 Connecticut 85, New Hampshire 66: Sterling Gibbs scored 18 of his 21 points in the first half and the Huskies (2-0) routed the Wildcats (1-1).
