College football ahead: Texas Christian is on a scoring frenzy

Five things to watch this week in college football:

1: How peaceful it was this weekend not having to discuss the trials — and future trials — of Florida State, which enjoyed a bye weekend that probably included some great BB-gun fights. The undefeated Seminoles return to work Thursday with a key Atlantic Coast Conference game at Louisville.

2: Someone must have spiked Texas Christian’s punch before that 82-point outburst against Texas Tech. The scoring spree pushed the Horned Frogs’ scoring average to a nation-best 50.4 in advance of next week’s game at West Virginia. The poor Mountaineers are averaging only 37 points per game.

3: Last week’s ugly loss at Arizona State shocked conservative Stanford Coach David Shaw into radical changes against Oregon State. The result was a jaw-dropping 38-14 performance that came just in time for Saturday’s Pac-12 North showdown at Oregon.

4: Alabama fans are sworn 365 days a year to hate Auburn, but they should be cheering vehemently for their Iron Bowl rivals in an all-important Southeastern Conference game at Mississippi. The Crimson Tide, to win the SEC West, needs Ole Miss to lose a game between now and December.

5: The media picked UCLA and USC to finish first and second in the Pac-12 South Division — so how is that turning out? The race for first moves east this week, when Utah (3-1) plays at division leader Arizona State (4-1) in Tempe.
