Wisconsin’s Joel Stave out for season with broken collarbone

Share

Wisconsin quarterback Joel Stave is done for the season after breaking his left collarbone against Michigan State.

Coach Bret Bielema announced the news Monday, two days after the Badgers’ 16-13 overtime loss to the Spartans. Doctors determined the redshirt freshman would not need surgery to repair the injury.

“It probably will be an eight-week recovery, which takes him out of the regular season,” Bielema said. “There is an outside chance of something for the postseason, but that would be right on the edge of it. And everything, if it goes to plan, he should be 100% to go for spring ball. The good news is he’s a freshman, so we have three years of eligibility remaining with him.”

Stave completed 70 of 118 attempts for 1,104 yards and six touchdowns in seven games. He had three passes intercepted.

Junior Danny O’Brien and senior Curt Phillips will vie for the starting spot for Wisconsin (6-3, 3-2 Big Ten Conference), which has an off week before playing Indiana (1-3, 3-5) on Nov. 10.

Lattimore says he will return

South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier says running back Marcus Lattimore told him he will be back on the field for the Gamecocks.

Spurrier spoke to a crowd of more than 1,000 players, students and fans who turned out Monday to wish Lattimore a speedy recovery and a happy 21st birthday.

Lattimore dislocated his right knee and severely damaged several ligaments in a horrific injury Saturday against Tennessee.

Spurrier says Lattimore sent him a text saying he isn’t done playing for South Carolina. Doctors have told the junior his injury could take more than a year of recovery, keeping him off the field until the 2014 season.

Lattimore watched the rally over the Internet.

He rushed for 662 yards this season and his 41 career touchdowns are a school record.

Ash to remain Longhorns starter

The Texas Longhorns are sticking with David Ash as starting quarterback.

Ash was replaced by Case McCoy late against Kansas and McCoy drove the Longhorns to the game-winning touchdown in a 21-17 win. But Coach Mack Brown says Ash will still be the starter when the Longhorns (6-2, 3-2 Big 12) travel this week to play at No. 20 Texas Tech (6-2, 3-2).

Vaz to start for Beavers

Oregon State Coach Mike Riley has decided to go with junior Cody Vaz as his starter for Saturday’s game against Arizona State.

Vaz had started two games for the No. 13 Beavers while starter Sean Mannion recovered from arthroscopic knee surgery. Mannion returned last Saturday to start against Washington, but threw four interceptions before Vaz replaced him in a 20-17 loss.

Before he injured his left knee, Mannion was averaging more than 339 yards per game in passing with seven touchdowns in four games.

Vaz, who hadn’t started a game since high school, stepped in during Mannion’s recovery and led the Beavers to a 42-24 win at BYU, and a 21-7 victory at home against Utah.
