ASU offensive coordinator gets Memphis job

Arizona State offensive coordinator Mike Norvell will be the new head coach at Memphis, a person with knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press.

University President M. David Rudd wrote on Twitter late Thursday afternoon that he hired a “great football coach” who would be introduced at a news conference Friday.

Norvell, 34, replaces Justin Fuente, who was hired by Virginia Tech on Sunday after four years at Memphis.

Norvell has run the Sun Devils’ offense for the last four years under Coach Todd Graham. Norvell also worked under Graham at Pittsburgh and Tulsa.

Richt is done at Georgia

Former Georgia coach Mark Richt will not coach the Bulldogs in their bowl game as originally planned.

Georgia says assistant head coach Bryan McClendon will serve as interim head coach in the bowl game. McClendon is the team’s wide receivers coach.

Georgia says it was informed by Richt on Thursday he will not stay with the team for its bowl game. Miami will introduce Richt as its new coach Friday.

Michael Haywood will be the new coach at Texas Southern after agreeing to a four-year contract. He replaces Darrell Asberry, who stepped down Sunday after Texas Southern went 3-7. Haywood most recently was the coach at Miami of Ohio. He was hired to coach Pittsburgh in December 2010, but was fired three weeks later when he was charged with domestic battery with a child present. The charges were eventually dropped.

Tenth-ranked North Carolina won’t have starting safety Sam Smiley for the rest of the season because of a torn left Achilles’ tendon suffered last weekend in a victory over North Carolina State. The Tar Heels will face No. 1 Clemson on Saturday in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game.

South Florida will play in the Dec. 21 Miami Beach Bowl, according to a report by ESPN, which owns and operates the bowl.
