Jason Schmidt pitches a gem in Atlanta. One of the two most glaring failed signings of General Manager Ned Collettis tenure with the Dodgers Andruw Jones was the other Schmidt was limited by shoulder problems to only one win over the first two years of his three-year, $47-million contract. Manager Joe Torre said in camp that Schmidt couldnt be expected to contribute, but the former all-atar made it back to the majors on July 20, starting against, and beating, Cincinnati. But of the four starts Schmidt was able to make this season, none was more memorable than the one on July 31, when he held the Braves to one hit over six shutout innings at Turner Field.
