Dodgers chase Jon Lester in 4-0 win over Cubs

KEY MOMENT: With the Dodgers facing a left-handed pitcher in Cubs starter Jon Lester, Manager Don Mattingly elected to field an entirely right-handed-hitting lineup. Adrian Gonzalez, Joc Pederson and Yasmani Grandal didn’t start. Nonetheless, the Dodgers scored twice off Lester in the first inning and twice more in the second. Lester lasted only four innings.

AT THE PLATE: Jimmy Rollins had two hits, a bunt single in the first inning and a run-scoring hit to center in the second. Rollins has three multihit games in his last five games. Howie Kendrick had a two-run double in the first inning. Enrique Hernandez tripled in a run and scored in the second.

ON THE MOUND: Carlos Frias, who was sick earlier in the week, pitched five scoreless innings. Mattingly said he was inclined to have Frias pitch the sixth inning, but the right-hander’s back tightened up because of dehydration. The Dodgers received another stellar performance from their bullpen, as Joel Peralta, J.P. Howell, Yimi Garcia and Kenley Jansen each pitched a scoreless inning. Peralta and Jansen were both pitching for the third consecutive day. Garcia was pitching for the third time in four days.

EXTRA BASES: Yasiel Puig was scratched from the Dodgers lineup for the second consecutive day, as he continued to be bothered by a ruptured callus on his left hand. “It’s just a pain-tolerance thing,” Mattingly said. … When the Dodgers visited Wrigley Field last year, Pederson picked up coffee for teammates at a nearby Starbucks wearing his full uniform. Pederson was once again subjected to the rookie-hazing ritual, only this time he was accompanied to the coffee shop by Mike Bolsinger and Adam Liberatore. … Corey Seager won’t play in the Futures Game, a showcase for top prospects at All-Star weekend. With the Dodgers declining to approve Seager’s selection for the July 12 game, they will instead be represented by double-A catcher Kyle Farmer and triple-A right-hander Juan Gonzalez. Farmer, a former eighth-round selection, has an acting credit to his name. He was a quarterback in the movie “The Blind Side.”
