Dodgers co-owner Peter Guber: No interest in buying Oakland Athletics

Dodgers co-owner Peter Guber said Wednesday he has no interest in buying the Oakland Athletics.

The East Bay Express reported Wednesday that Guber and his ownership partner in the Golden State Warriors, Joe Lacob, lead an investment group exploring the possibility of buying the A’s and building a ballpark in Oakland.

“Absolutely not true,” Guber told The Times. “100% not true.”

Guber declined comment about whether Lacob might be interested but called it “categorically incorrect” to say he might be.

“I have not had any conversations with the league or any of the owners about buying the team,” Guber said. “I love the Dodgers. I love the Warriors.”

Guber, a veteran Hollywood executive whose Mandalay Entertainment Group has branched into sports, invested $25 million into Guggenheim Baseball Management’s $2-billion purchase of the Dodgers last year.

Guber did lead an investment group that tried to buy the A’s before the current owners, John Fisher and Lew Wolff, bought the team in 2005.

Wolff has been the point man in a bid to move the A’s to San Jose, an issue that dates to 2009 and is now stalled in the courts. He and Fisher have denied any interest in selling the team, and it is unlikely Commissioner Bud Selig would force a sale because of a long and unpopular struggle toward a new ballpark.

After all, Jeffrey Loria still owns the Miami Marlins.
