Philadelphia Eagles accept Trump’s invitation to visit the White House on June 5
The Philadelphia Eagles have accepted an invitation to visit the White House on June 5 to celebrate their victory in Super Bowl LII. But attendance is not mandatory for players, coach Doug Pederson told reporters Tuesday.
“We’re excited to be going,” Pederson said on the Eagles’ first day of organized team activities. “At the same time, it’s an individual decision.”
Quarterback Carson Wentz told reporters “if the team decides as a whole most guys want to go or be a part of it, I will be attending with them.” But he added that such a decision should not be viewed as a political one.
“I think it’s just a cool way to receive the honor kind of nationally and be recognized,” Wentz said. “I don’t personally view it as some people do. Everyone has their own opinion on it. I don’t view it as a political thing whatsoever.”
Some players — such as Chris Long, Malcolm Jenkins and Torrey Smith — had already stated they have no intention of taking part in the visit because of their feelings toward President Trump.
Last year, Trump rescinded the 2017 NBA champion Golden State Warriors’ invitation to the White House after several players, particularly Stephen Curry, indicated they wouldn’t attend.
