Egg Drop rallies to win $250,000 Matriarch at Hollywood Park
The Koch family knows drama. Howard W. Koch was one of Hollywood’s biggest producers. And his grandson, Billy, is the managing partner for Little Red Feather Racing. The star horse in the stable, Egg Drop, provided plenty of thrills Sunday at Betfair Hollywood Park.
Taking the lead from the start in the Grade I, $250,000 Matriarch, Egg Drop surrendered the lead to Discreet Marq in midstretch, then rallied along the rail under Martin Garcia and came away with a nose victory in the one-mile turf race at odds of 10-1.
“It was incredible,” Billy said in a winner’s circle among nearly 50 people getting their photo taken. “To win the last one is amazing.”
Said trainer Mike Mitchell: “She just did it on guts. She’s a tough little thing.”
With only three more weekends of racing before Betfair Hollywood Park closes its track for good, Sunday’s card offered two Grade I races.
In the $251,000 Hollywood Derby, the European-based Seek Again, trained by John Gosden and ridden by Corey Nakatani, made a decisive move along the rail in the stretch and scored a 11/2-length victory over Admiral Kitten in his American debut. Amen Kitten finished third in the 11/4-mile race.
Seek Again, a 3-year-old son of Speightstown, will be sent to Florida-based trainer Bill Mott to race in 2014.
“The jockey gave him a great ride,” assistant trainer Leslie Richard said.
