Mt. SAC to play City College of San Francisco for state football title

For the fifth time since 1997, Mt. San Antonio College and City College of San Francisco will play for the California state community college football championship.

The teams, which play Saturday at Mt. SAC at 1 p.m., have split four previous title games. Mt. SAC won in 1997 and 2010. San Francisco won in 2007 and 2011.

San Francisco has won seven state titles since 1994. The Rams, ranked second in the state with a record of 11-1, are led by quarterback Bob Rodriguez, who has passed for 2,382 yards and 18 touchdowns. Jahray Hayes has gained 1,005 yards rushing and scored 22 touchdowns.

The defense is led by safety Shalom Luani and defensive end Tavita Faaiu. Luani has four interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns. Faaiu has 14.5 sacks.

Mt. SAC (10-2), which was No. 4 in the last ranking, reached the title game by beating top-ranked Riverside, 35-14, avenging a loss to the Tigers during the regular season. Quarterback Justin Alo passed for 263 yards and three touchdowns and running back Omaris Tolbert gained 172 yards in the semifinal victory.

Alo has passed for 2,980 yards and 24 touchdowns. Tolbert has run for 1,194 yards and scored 13 touchdowns.

The defense is led by safety TyquwanGlass and linebacker Sitiveni Tamaivena. Glass has six interceptions. Tamaivena has 10.5 sacks and one interception, which he returned for a touchdown.
