Kings, Martin Jones beat Maple Leafs, 3-1

TORONTO — The Kings did goaltender Jonathan Bernier a favor when they traded him to the Maple Leafs last summer and he got a chance to become an NHL starter. But on Wednesday, they reminded him of the depth and quality of the team he left behind.

Kings rookie goalie Martin Jones won his fourth straight start, stopping 38 shots as the Kings defeated Bernier and the Maple Leafs, 3-1, at the Air Canada Center and extended their winning streak to five games.

Jones’ personal shutout streak ended at 177 minutes 16 seconds when Toronto scored during a two-man advantage in the second period. But Jeff Carter’s wrist shot off a two-on-one breakout at 9:40 of the third period gave the Kings a 2-1 lead, and Kyle Clifford added an insurance goal at 18:01 to allow the Kings to prolong several other streaks and sweep both ends of a back-to-back sequence. They had opened this four-game trip with a 6-0 victory over the Canadiens on Tuesday at Montreal.

The Kings (21-7-4) have given up two goals or fewer in 17 straight games and have not allowed a first-period goal in any of those games. They’re 12-1-4 in that span. They also have a nine-game road points streak, at 7-0-2.

Fourth-line center Colin Fraser, hit hard by Toronto’s Frazer McLaren in the eighth minute of the second period, appeared dazed and had to be helped off the ice. He did not return. A team spokesman said only that Fraser was injured on the play and did not specify the nature of the injury.

The Kings scored first, during a first-period power play they had gained after Peter Holland was sent off for holding. Carter entered the zone with some speed and came around behind the net, where he sent the puck back to Mike Richards. He found Doughty, who had a clear path on the right side to skate to the top of the circle and lift a shot past Bernier for his sixth goal this season and 200th NHL point.

Jones stopped Phil Kessel at point-blank range a few times, keeping his shutout streak going until penalties to Willie Mitchell and Doughty left the Kings down two men midway through the second period. Defenseman Cody Franson ended the streak by snapping a shot past Jones from the left circle, set up deftly by Kessel and Jake Gardiner, at 14:30.
