Kings allow assistant John Stevens to interview elsewhere

The Kings have granted other NHL teams permission to interview assistant coach John Stevens for their respective head coaching vacancies.

The Vancouver Canucks appear to be the front-runner for Stevens, who was the Philadelphia Flyers’ coach for parts of four seasons before he joined the Kings’ staff in June 2010. He has spent the last three seasons guiding the Kings’ highly regarded defense corps and strong penalty-killing unit.

Kings Coach Darryl Sutter said Monday he considers Stevens “a head coach with us” because of the responsibilities Stevens has fulfilled. “Does Johnny Stevens want to be a head coach? Absolutely,” Sutter said. “That’s how I feel about him on our staff.”

The New York Rangers and Dallas Stars are also seeking head coaches. The Edmonton Oilers on Monday hired Dallas Eakins to replace Ralph Krueger.
