The setting: The Lakers and Celtics were tied with three seconds left when West stole an inbounds pass at midcourt, raced toward the basket and scored on a layup at the buzzer for a 117-115 victory at the Sports Arena.
The significance: West was carried off the court by teammates after his shot gave the Lakers a 2-1 series lead. The crowd of 15,180 was the largest basketball crowd in the history of the Sports Arena. West finished with 36 points, while teammate Elgin Baylor had 39. |
