Bernhard Langer wins Senior British Open

Bernhard Langer won his first senior major title on Sunday, holding off a final-round challenge from Corey Pavin for a one-stroke win in the Senior British Open at Carnoustie, Scotland.

The German shot a one-over 72 to finish at five-under 279. Pavin ended with a one-under 70.

Tom Watson finished with 74 for a six-over 290. He said he would return next year to play in the British Open and Senior British Open.

Carl Pettersson overcame a six-stroke deficit to win the Canadian Open for his fourth PGA Tour victory, following his tournament-record 60 in the third round with a three-under 67 to beat Dean Wilson by a shot at Toronto.

The 32-year-old Swede finished at 14-under 266 at hilly, tree-lined St. George’s.

Richard Johnson of Sweden won the Scandinavian Masters at Stockholm, making a 30-foot birdie putt at the last hole to shoot a one-under 71 and finish a stroke clear of Rafa Echenique of Argentina.

Johnson finished with a total of 11-under 277.

Jiyai Shin of South Korea birdied the 18th hole to win the Evian Masters, shooting a five-under 67 to finish at 14 under and one stroke ahead of Morgan Pressel, Na Yeon Choi and Alexis Thompson at Evian-les-Bains, France.

Dixon wins controversial race

Scott Dixon won a controversial Honda Edmonton Indy at Edmonton, Canada, after Helio Castroneves crossed the finish line first but was penalized for blocking his teammate.

An enraged Castroneves, who ended up 10th, stormed from his car after the race to yell at IndyCar officials and grabbed one by the collar.

Castroneves took the lead from Team Penske teammate Will Power with 18 laps to go in the 95-lap race but was called for blocking Power when Power tried to pass him on a restart with two laps to go.

Fernando Alonso won the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim for Ferrari, but the team was fined $100,000 afterward for orchestrating his pass of teammate Felipe Massa.

Race stewards didn’t overturn Ferrari’s 1-2 finish, choosing to send the case to the sport’s governing body. Alonso had more points in the title race, and the team apparently thought it would be better served if he collected the 25 points that go to the winner rather than Massa.

Robert Hight defeated father-in-law John Force to win the funny car classification of the Mile-High Nationals at Morrison, Colo.

The other winners in the 16th race of the 23-race NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series season were Doug Kalitta (top fuel), Allen Johnson (pro stock) and Andrew Hines (pro stock motorcycle).

Evening Jewel won the $150,000 San Clemente Handicap for 3-year-old fillies by three-quarters of a length at Del Mar.

Former West Hills Chaminade thrower Conor McCullough, who now attends Princeton, won the World Junior Championship in the hammer throw at Moncton, Canada, with an effort of 80.79 meters, which is more than 265 feet, a personal best.
