Bernard Hopkins is world champion at 46

Bernard Hopkins became the oldest fighter to win a major world championship, taking the WBC light-heavyweight title Saturday night at Montreal from Jean Pascal at the age of 46.

Hopkins (52-5-2) is the oldest fighter to take a major world belt since George Foreman won the heavyweight title at 45 against Michael Moorer in 1994.

“I won’t retire until I’m 50,” Hopkins said.

Wi grabs the lead after Toms falters

Charlie Wi made a 32-foot birdie putt on the par-three 16th hole soon after a weather delay at the PGA Tour’s Colonial, taking the lead after David Toms blew a seven-stroke advantage in the third round at Fort Worth, Texas.

Wi finished with a four-under 66 to get to 13 under, a stroke better than Toms (74) and four ahead of John Senden (70).

Luke Donald will meet Martin Kaymer in the semifinals of the World Match Play Championship on Sunday at Casares, Spain, with the No. 1 spot firmly in their sights. Lee Westwood’s elimination by Ian Poulter in the round of 16 left him vulnerable at the top of the rankings. Second-ranked Donald struggled against Johan Edfors, needing a playoff to beat the Swede. But he defeated Charl Schwartzel by two holes in the quarterfinals.

Kaymer beat Spain’s Alvaro Quiros by two holes in the quarterfinals after earlier eliminating Soren Kjeldsen, three and two. Poulter will face Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts in the other semifinal.

Angela Stanford birdied four of the final five holes and beat Paula Creamer by two holes, setting up a semifinal match against Cristie Kerr in the Sybase Match Play Championship at Gladstone, N.J. Na Yeon Choi of South Korea will face Suzann Pettersen in the other semifinal Sunday.

Carter says he has tumors in his brain

Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter said doctors discovered four “very small” brain tumors after he had an MRI on Friday in Florida. Carter, 57, said in a release issued by the New York Mets and the Hall of Fame that he will be examined again Thursday at Duke Medical Center.

The 11-time All-Star hit .262 with 324 home runs and drove in 1,225 runs in 19 seasons. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003.

Carl Edwards picked up a $1-million payday by winning the NASCAR all-star race at Concord, N.C. Edwards won three of the four segments in the 100-lap race. UCLA fought off a last-round surge by defending champion Purdue to win the NCAA women’s golf championship by four strokes at Bryan, Texas, and Louisiana State freshman Austin Ernst had a hole-in-one and shot a six-under 66 to win the individual title by three strokes. The Bruins finished at 21-over 1,173 for their third national title. … The UCLA men rallied from four strokes down to win the NCAA West Regional at San Diego by three shots over USC. Freshman Patrick Cantlay earned medalist honors at 13 under for the Bruins, who will compete in the NCAA championships beginning May 31 at Stillwater, Okla. …

The UCLA softball team lost to Florida, 4-2, in NCAA regional play at Gainesville, Fla., but beat Jacksonville, 12-4, to stay alive. The Bruins will face Florida again Sunday and need two victories over the Gators to advance. … The USC men’s tennis team advanced to the NCAA semifinals with a 4-1 victory over Kentucky and will continue its bid for a third straight national title when it faces Georgia on Monday at Palo Alto.

Top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki overcame a thigh injury to defeat Peng Shuai, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, and win the Brussels Open. … Andrea Petkovic won the title after top-seeded Marion Bartoli retired because of a thigh injury while trailing, 6-4, 1-0, in the final of the Strasbourg International in France. … Nicolas Almagro rallied past Victor Hanescu, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3, in the Open de Nice final in France.
