Redskins’ Robert Griffin III cleared to practice

Robert Griffin III has passed a major test toward his goal of playing in Week 1 of the NFL season, getting the go-ahead from the team doctors days before the Washington Redskins open training camp.

“Doctors cleared me to practice. Coach is going to ease me in,” Griffin announced Monday on Twitter.

The two sentences represent hurdles past and future. Even though Griffin says he has the medical clearance after recovering from torn knee ligaments, it is now up to Coach Mike Shanahan to determine how often and how vigorously Griffin practices when the Redskins open camp Thursday in Richmond, Va.

The Redskins had no comment on Griffin’s tweet. However, a person familiar with the situation said the Redskins have cleared Griffin to practice. The person spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the club has not made an announcement.

The latest distraction for the Denver Broncos comes from All-Pro linebacker Von Miller, who insisted he did nothing wrong in the face of reports he could miss four games for violating the NFL’s drug policy.

“I know I did nothing wrong. I’m sure this’ll be resolved fairly,” Miller tweeted, acknowledging he had seen the reports and adding he was disappointed the Broncos have to open training camp with this news hanging over them.

A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the possible penalty to the Associated Press.

Cornerback Eric Wright failed his physical with the San Francisco 49ers, nullifying a trade with Tampa Bay.

He was subsequently released by the Buccaneers.

Kings, Ducks invited to national camps

A number of Kings and Ducks players were invited to the orientation camps being held by USA Hockey and Team Canada for the Winter Olympics, which will be held in Sochi, Russia, in February.

The Kings who are invited to the U.S. camp Aug. 26-27 in Arlington, Va., are goalie Jonathan Quick and forwards Dustin Brown and Trevor Lewis. The Ducks who are invited are defenseman Cam Fowler, forward Kyle Palmieri and a highly touted prospect, goaltender John Gibson.

The Kings who are invited to the Canadian camp Aug. 25-28 in Calgary are defenseman Drew Doughty and forwards Mike Richards and Jeff Carter. The Ducks who are invited are center Ryan Getzlaf and forward Corey Perry.

A person with knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press that point guard Nate Robinson agreed to a two-year deal with the Denver Nuggets.

Ohio State football Coach Urban Meyer disciplined four players for legal problems, including suspending leading scorer Carlos Hyde from all team activities after an alleged assault against a woman over the weekend in Columbus.

In addition, star cornerback Bradley Roby, who was arrested in Indiana after an alleged altercation with a security guard at a bar over the weekend, will not represent the Buckeyes at this week’s Big Ten media days.

Freshman recruits Marcus Baugh, a tight end from Riverside, and defensive lineman Tim Gardner were also disciplined.

The Pac-12 and Big 12 conferences have a new six-year deal with the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl in Tempe, Ariz.

Beginning after the 2014 regular season, the bowl will match the sixth selection from the Pac-12 against the fifth pick from the Big 12, after selections by the College Football Playoff.

Authorities have dismissed charges against North Carolina basketball leading scorer P.J. Hairston from a traffic stop last month.

Hairston was arrested June 5 and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession and driving without a license at a checkpoint in Durham, N.C. But prosecutors dismissed those charges Friday after Hairston produced proof he had a driver’s license and had completed a drug assessment program, said Elizabeth Tapley of the Durham County clerk of courts’ office.
