Edinson Volquez joins Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed 30-year-old right-hander pitcher Edinson Volquez and 34-year-old infielder Clint Barmes to one-year deals. Volquez went 9-12 with a 5.71 earned-run average last season splitting time with the San Diego Padres and the Dodgers. Barmes hit .211 for Pittsburgh last season.

The Colorado Rockies signed first baseman Justin Morneau to a two-year, $12.5-million deal.

He will step in for Todd Helton, who retired at the end of the season.

GOLF: Two 59s in South Africa

Spain’s Jorge Campillo and South Africa’s Colin Nel each shot 59 in the second round of the rain-affected Nelson Mandela Championship, although their scores won’t count as a European Tour record because players were allowed to use preferred lies on the soaked layout at Durban, South Africa. Par at the Mount Edgecombe course was reduced by one stroke to 70. Campillo had two eagles and seven birdies for a share of the clubhouse lead at 11-under 129 with England’s Matthew Baldwin (62). Nel had an eagle and nine birdies to move into a share of 27th at four under. Daniel Brooks had the lead at 12 under with seven holes to play.

Defending champions Kenny Perry and Sean O’Hair shot an eight-under 64 in modified alternate-shot play for a share of the first-round lead in the Franklin Templeton Shootout at Naples, Fla. The teams of Matt Kuchar-Harris English and Charles Howell III-Justin Leonard also shot 64 on the Ritz-Carlton Resort’s Tiburon course.
