Juan Pablo Montoya had a two-lap average of 223.871 mph Saturday at Pocono Raceway for his first career IndyCar pole.
Driving for Team Penske in his open-wheel return after seven years in NASCAR, the Colombian moved ahead of Penske teammate Will Power on the day's final qualifying run at Long Pond, Pa.
Carlos Munoz joins Montoya and Power on the front row. Montoya won a Pocono pole in NASCAR in August 2012.
"It's fun because I feel it starting to click," Montoya said. "The more it starts to click, the more confident you get in the car, the more you push it."
Formula One championship leader Nico Rosberg claimed pole position for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, England, surpassing Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton on the last lap of a rainy qualifying session.
Rosberg secured the pole by persevering on his final lap in drying conditions as Hamilton, who had the fastest time to that point, aborted his lap because of the wet conditions. Hamilton ended up qualifying sixth for his home race.
Defending four-time champion Sebastian Vettel qualified second for Red Bull and McLaren's Jenson Button was third.
