Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn to sit out a week, then may return

Lindsey Vonn will skip the World Cup ski races next week in Beaver Creek, Colo., as she recovers from a downhill training crash in which she partially tore one of the reconstructed ligaments in her surgically repaired right knee.

The reigning Olympic downhill champion, however, is not ruling out a possible return to racing in Lake Louise, Canada, the following week, her personal publicist, Lewis Kay, said in a statement Friday. The Sochi Games are less than three months away.

GOLF: Scott Brown leads at Pebble Beach

Scott Brown shot a four-under 68 at Spyglass Hill on Friday and leads the Pebble Beach Invitational by one stroke over Jason Kokrak after two rounds.

Brown had two bogeys and six birdies, all within 10 feet. He is at 10-under 134. Kokrak, who opened with a 67 at Pebble Beach, had a 68 at Del Monte. Morgan Hoffmann, who opened with a 65 at Spyglass for a one-shot lead over four players, shot a 71 at Pebble Beach. He was third at 136.

Sandra Gal picked up three birdies on the back nine during a windy day at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Fla., giving her a three-under 69 and a three-shot lead going into the weekend of the LPGA Titleholders tournament, a season-finale event that pays $700,000 to the winner.

Charl Schwartzel shot a seven-under 65 to share the lead with Marco Crespi at 12-under 132 in the European Tour’s season-opening South African Open at Johannesburg.

BASEBALL: Mets, Chris Young reach agreement

The New York Mets agreed with outfielder Chris Young on a $7.25-million, one-year contract, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. The agreement is subject to a physical, the person said Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity to the Associated Press because the deal was not yet final.

Arbitrator Fredric Horowitz’s decision on whether to uphold or alter the discipline for the New York Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez will probably be made in January, a person familiar with the proceedings told the Associated Press.

The Chicago Cubs say Brandon Hyde will be the bench coach and former American League batting champion Bill Mueller will be the hitting coach on new Manager Rick Renteria’s staff.

A federal judge in Chicago has sentenced former Chicago White Sox scout Victor Mateo scout to eight months in prison for wire fraud in a kickback scheme that targeted players from Latin America. Prosecutors said that the Dominican-born Mateo and two others fraudulently inflated amounts of signing bonuses and took the added money.

Houston Astros owner Jim Crane has sued the team’s former owner Drayton McLane as well as Comcast Corp. and NBC Universal Media, accusing them of fraud, misrepresentation and conspiracy. Crane alleges he’s lost possibly hundreds of millions of dollars because they misrepresented the value of a regional television network that broadcasts Astros games.

ETC.: Jamaican anti-doping officials resign

All 12 members of the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission have resigned amid questions about drug testing on an island that has produced some of the world’s top track stars. Jamaica’s anti-doping program was audited by the World Anti-Doping Agency after a former Jamaica director alleged it didn’t drug-test its athletes for entire months before they dazzled at the 2012 London Olympics. Eight Jamaican athletes have failed drug tests this year, including former 100-meter world-record holder Asafa Powell.

The World Anti-Doping Agency in Lausanne, Switzerland, annulled all the results of Australian motorcyclist Anthony West from the past 18 months because of a doping offense. West tested positive in May 2012 for the banned stimulant methylhexaneamine and was initially banned for one month.

Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg was fastest in the second practice for Formula One’s season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix, edging Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull teammate Mark Webber on a wet Interlagos track at Sao Paulo. Rosberg timed 1 minute 27.306 seconds at the 2.6-mile track, 0.225 ahead of Vettel and 0.286 in front of Webber.

The NBA fined New York Knicks Coach Mike Woodson $25,000 for public criticism of the officiating.

Prosecutors in Denver filed a misdemeanor assault charge against Colorado Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov after his girlfriend, Evgeniya Vavrinyuk, said he attacked her Oct. 30 in her apartment. Varlamov, 25, faces one count of third-degree assault. His attorney, Saskia Jordan of Denver, did not immediately return a call for comment Friday. His agent, Paul Theofanous, has said the player is innocent. The Avalanche said in a statement that team officials were informed of the district attorney’s decision, but would “have no further comment until the entire legal process has concluded.” Varlamov is free on $5,000 bond and has been traveling and playing with the team. He is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 2.
