Matt Holliday traded to Cardinals from A’s

The busy St. Louis Cardinals have added a big bat for their pennant drive.

They acquired three-time All-Star outfielder Matt Holliday and cash from the Oakland Athletics on Friday for a package of prospects. And Holliday was in the Cardinals’ lineup in left field and batting cleanup behind slugger Albert Pujols for Friday night’s game against the World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies.

The first-place Cardinals have been looking to add another hitter in the middle of the lineup to support Pujols.

Kansas City Royals right fielder Jose Guillen could sit out up to 10 weeks because of a torn right knee ligament.

Funk leads Senior British Open

Fred Funk shot a five-under-par 65 for a three-shot lead at the Senior British Open at Sunningdale, England.

He is a tournament-record 11 under through two rounds and leads Tom Watson by seven shots.

Funk has a three-stroke lead over Sam Torrance.

Jerry Kelly topped the leaderboard in the rain-delayed Canadian Open, shooting a seven-under 65 in the completion of the first round and reaching 11 under overall with three holes left in the second at Oakville. Camilo Villegas, Tim Herron, Martin Laird and Nathan Green were a stroke back. . . . Ai Miyazato shot a six-under 66 to share the second-round lead with Na Yeon Choi in the Evian Masters at Evian-Les-Bains, France.

Trail Blazers sign guard Miller

The Portland Trail Blazers signed veteran free-agent guard Andre Miller to a three-year, $21-million deal.

Miller, whose NBA career has spanned 10 seasons with four teams, averaged 16.3 points and 6.5 assists as a starter for the Philadelphia 76ers last season.

Restricted free-agent forward Jamario Moon is joining the Cleveland Cavaliers after the Miami Heat did not match the offer sheet he signed.

Bolt easily wins 100 at London

Against a strong headwind, Usain Bolt eased to victory in the 100 meters at the London Grand Prix in his last race at the distance before the world championships next month.

The Olympic champion and world record-holder finished in 9.91 seconds at Crystal Palace.

Elsewhere, Yelena Isinbayeva was stunned in the pole vault by Anna Rogowska, losing for the first time in six years.

Five Jamaican track and field athletes tested positive for doping, although none of the nation’s premier sprinters is among the group, a newspaper reported.

U.S. Open suffers two withdrawals

David Nalbandian of Argentina and Mario Ancic of Croatia have withdrawn from next month’s U.S. Open.

The United States Tennis Assn. said that the 15th-ranked Nalbandian is recovering from hip surgery and the 90th-ranked Ancic is battling mononucleosis.

Top-seeded Dmitry Tursunov was upset in the quarterfinals of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships, losing 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2, to Frank Dancevic.

Chelsea edges AC Milan, 2-1

Yuri Zhirkov scored in the 69th minute for Chelsea to defeat AC Milan, 2-1, and provide new coach Carlo Ancelotti a satisfying victory over his former team in the World Football Challenge at Baltimore.

Didier Drogba scored Chelsea’s first goal in the first half, though AC Milan tied before halftime on a goal by Clarence Seedorf.

Wide receiver Drew Bennett, formerly of UCLA, has agreed to a one-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens.

Mayfield is back under suspension

Jeremy Mayfield is back under suspension for a failed random drug test after an appeals court ruled in NASCAR’s favor, issuing a stay on the injunction that gave the driver the right to return to the racetrack.

The one-page decision by the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals stands until NASCAR’s full appeal can be heard.

The four major pro sports leagues and the NCAA sued the state of Delaware, seeking to block the state from implementing sports betting.
