Rick Ankiel’s two-out, two-run single lifts Cardinals over Cubs
* at St. Louis 5, Chicago 4: Rick Ankiel’s two-run, two-out single to right field in the bottom of the ninth inning capped a three-run rally. The Cardinals did it against Cubs closer Kerry Wood, who blew his fifth save of the season in 27 chances.
* New York 9, at Philadelphia 4: Pinch-hitter Brian Schneider lined a tiebreaking double with two out in the eighth inning. Schneider was the Mets’ third pinch-hitter of the inning as they overcame a 4-3 deficit.
* Houston 6, at Atlanta 1: Chris Sampson, filling in for the injured Roy Oswalt, gave up only one run in five innings. He has posted a 2.16 earned-run average in 13 relief appearances since his last start on May 25.
* at Milwaukee 2, Pittsburgh 1: Prince Fielder singled home Rickie Weeks with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning.
* at Cincinnati 3, Washington 2: Brandon Phillips singled in Jerry Hairston Jr. from second base in the ninth inning.
* at Colorado 12, Florida 6: The Rockies won their season-best fifth in a row, their longest winning streak since last fall’s 21-1 run-up to the World Series.
* San Diego 4, at Arizona 2: The Diamondbacks (43-45) are two games under .500 for the first time this season.
* at San Francisco 5, Dodgers 2: The Dodgers failed to get to within one game of .500 for the first time since June 2.
