With no glaring weaknesses and talent throughout its roster, Bellflower St. John Bosco has been ranked No. 1 in The Times' preseason top-25 high school football rankings in Southern California.
It marks a milestone for Coach Jason Negro, who took over a program four years ago that had trouble competing in the tough Trinity League and helped transform it into a team that should challenge for the Pac-5 Division championship.
"When you're on top, everyone is going to be gunning for you," Negro said.
Getting past Long Beach Poly will be on the Braves' goal list this season. Poly eliminated them in a playoff semifinal last season and returns a strong defensive unit. The Jackrabbits are ranked No. 2.
The season begins Thursday and Friday.
