Rams will pay UC Irvine about $10 million to host training camp for three years

The Rams will pay UC Irvine about $10 million to host the team’s training camp for three years, with an option for two more, according to a copy of the contract obtained under California’s Public Records Act.

The lease covers the use of a host of UCI facilities including Crawford Field, 15 classrooms, two parking lots and two locker rooms from July 15 to Sept. 4 each year. UCI will provide 225 rooms for 41 nights at the Campus Village apartments— and twice-weekly housekeeping service.

The Rams also get exclusive use of BC’s Cavern on the Green dining hall. UCI will charge the team $46 per player for each dinner this year.

As part of the contract, UCI agreed to renovate two locker rooms, refurbish restrooms and shower areas and create a “secure information technology network” that includes a dedicated server for the Rams.

The Rams will pick up the tab for any event logistics during training camp. The potential costs — listed in a detailed schedule attached to the contract — include $19 per person per hour for an “usher/ticket taker,” $89 per person per hour for a UCI police officer and a $3 surcharge for each ticket sold.

The first payment from the Rams to UCI is $4.4 million, split into two equal installments. The Rams owe $3.3 million and $2.6 million in subsequent years, though the amounts could be adjusted after UCI reviews the Rams’ requirements after this year’s training camp.

Sixteen practices will be open to the public this year, but that shouldn’t disrupt UCI’s normal campus operations since its fall quarter doesn’t start until Sept. 19.

The Rams will use Cal Lutheran as their temporary headquarters during the regular season while a permanent home is constructed elsewhere.
