Clippers’ Blake Griffin to have knee surgery today

Clippers All-Star forward Blake Griffin is scheduled to have arthroscopic surgery today to repair a torn medial meniscus in his left knee, the team announced early Monday morning.

The Clippers didn’t release a timetable for Griffin’s return, but he’s expected to sit out about eight weeks after the surgery and is expected to make a full recovery in time for the start of training camp in October.

Dr. Neal ElAttrache of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic will perform the surgery.

Griffin, who signed a five-year, $95-million contract extension last Tuesday, suffered the injury at a U.S. Olympic team practice Wednesday in Las Vegas.

It is the same knee Griffin had season-ending surgery on during his 2009-10 rookie season with the Clippers, but the Clippers said the stress fracture procedure ElAttrache performed on Griffin’s kneecap then was unrelated to his current injury.

It’s also the same knee that Griffin sprained in Game 5 of the Western Conference first-round playoff series this year against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Griffin didn’t miss a game in that series and played in the next four games in the semifinals against the San Antonio Spurs.
