Warren Sapp files for bankruptcy protection in Florida
Warren Sapp, a former All-Pro defensive tackle for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders, has filed for bankruptcy in Florida, it was reported this weekend.
Court records filed by Sapp in Fort Lauderdale on March 30 show that he seeks Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection, which was first reported by TMZ.com. The Associated Press has left messages with Sapp’s attorney, who hasn’t responded.
Documents indicate Sapp owes more than $6.7 million to creditors as well as child support and alimony.
Sapp lists $6.45 million in assets, which include more than 200 pairs of Jordan shoes.
He also reports losing his 2002 Super Bowl ring with the Bucs and his 1991 national championship ring from the University of Miami.
Sapp, who reported more than $118,000 in annual income, had a 13-year NFL career, during which he registered 96.5 sacks and 438 tackles. He was chosen to seven Pro Bowls and was an All-Pro first team selection four consecutive years, from 1999 to 2002.
Since his retirement he has been an NFL commentator and appeared on the ABC show “Dancing With the Stars.”
