Agoura’s Jonathan Cabral sweeps hurdle events at Mt. SAC Relays

All eyes were on Jonathan Cabral as he settled into the starting block for the high school 300 hurdles Invitational Saturday morning in the first of his two events on the third and final day of the 53rd annual Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut.

One week earlier, the Oregon-bound senior from Agoura posted national-leading marks in the 110 and 300 hurdles at the Arcadia Invitational and spectators at Hilmer Lodge Stadium were eager to see whether he could top them.

Cabral had trouble with his stride in the first 100 meters but pulled away on the straightaway to win in 37.49 seconds, well off his personal-best 36.42 at Arcadia. Four hours later, he was back on the track for the 110 hurdles Invitational, which he won easily in 13.48.

He had run a personal-best 13.43 at Arcadia.

Rio Mesa won the boys’ 4x100 Invitational in 41.13, the top time in the state this year and 25 hundredths of a second faster than the Spartans’ winning time in Arcadia. Gardena Serra won the boys’ 4x200 Invitational in a state-leading 1:26.53, edging Rio Mesa (1:26.65).

Cami Chapus of North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake ran a 2:08 anchor as the Wolverines won the sprint medley Invitational in a nation-leading 3:57.23. The same foursome later won the distance medley Invitational in 11:45.74 but couldn’t better the national-leading 11:40.89 they ran at Arcadia.

Kylie Price of La Puente Bishop Amat won the girls’ 100 Invitational in 11.82 and the Invitational long jump in 19-10.5. Long Beach Poly won the girls’ 4x100 Invitational in a state-leading 45.70.

Jaysuma Ndure, the Norwegian national record holder, ran a world-leading time of 10.06 in the men’s 100 Elite Invitational, and Nike’s Carmelita Jeter ran a world-leading 10.99 in the women’s Elite Invitational 100.

Agoura’s Jonathan Cabral dominates 110- and 300-meter hurdles at Arcadia Invitational

Aareon Payne of USC won the women’s 200 Elite Invitational in 22.83, Jessica Davis won the women’s 200 Olympic Development Elite in 22.98 and fellow Trojan Oscar Spurlock won the men’s 110 Olympic Development Elite hurdles in 13.33.

Jesse Williams of the Oregon Track Club set a meet and stadium record 7-8 in the high jump.

Los Angeles Loyola won the boys’ distance medley in 10:02.23.

Charles Jock of UC Irvine won the men’s 800 Elite Invitational in 1:45.19, the best collegiate time this year in that event.

Reigning Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix made a surprise cameo in the 400-meter relay, anchoring the Kersee All-Stars to a win in a time of 43.10 seconds.
