Taking stock of the summer's high school transfers (so far)

It is has become almost a summer ritual keeping track of the many players switching schools in a variety of sports.

Last school year, there were 14,918 sports-related transfers statewide. If this summer is any indication, there should be even more in 2013-14.

As usual, basketball leads the way in impact transfers.

Just last week, Kendall Small, a junior point guard at Huntington Beach Ocean View who averaged 20.8 points as a sophomore and has scholarship offers to several Pac-12 schools, transferred to Lakewood Mayfair. He has been joined by senior guard Isaac Deese, a transfer from Long Beach Poly.

Another big winner is West Hills Chaminade, which got junior point guard Michael Oguine from Reseda Cleveland and picked up 6-foot-5 senior Brayden Lenius from British Columbia. He's also a top receiver in football.

The Marmonte League is full of comings and goings in basketball transfers. Junior Michael Ayon went from Calabasas to Westlake. Matt Hauser, a junior guard from Arizona, and 6-foot-6 senior Davis Tate from Ventura St. Bonaventure, transferred to Thousand Oaks. Joe Colliatie, a 6-3 senior guard from St. Louis, transferred to Simi Valley. Agoura lost junior guard Kenneth Koffi to Oak Park. Simi Valley Royal lost junior guard Chris Terry to Woodland Hills El Camino Real.

Both of Garden Serra's starting guards from last season's Division 4AA championship team, Ajon Efferson and Ellis Salahuddin, have left. Efferson went back to Pasadena, and Salahuddin moved to Orange County and is considering JSerra, Orange Lutheran and Santa Ana Mater Dei.

Needing a guard, Mater Dei picked up junior Rex Pflueger from JSerra. Justin Simons, a 6-foot-4 junior at Eastvale Roosevelt, transferred to Temecula Valley.

Los Angeles View Park is the final destination for junior guard Darius Henderson, a transfer from Woodland Hills Taft. View Park has lost 6-foot-10 junior Brodericks Jones, who is considering other schools. St. John Bosco has lost senior center Devin Burleson to Palmdale Highland. Jordan Dallas, a 6-foot-9 junior, has also checked out of St. John Bosco.

In football, the summer has been good again to Mission Viejo, which added senior defensive lineman Nick Dehdashtian (6-2, 265) from Santa Margarita. He joins previous Santa Margarita transfers Sean Modster and Alex Suchesk from last summer.

Quarterbacks switching schools after figuring out they aren't going to start is another summer ritual. Crespi gained junior quarterback Wes Massett from Westlake, which picked up sophomore quarterback Malik Henry from Oaks Christian during the spring. Henry would have been a backup to Brandon Dawkins.

Tesoro gained sophomore quarterback Devon Modster from Mission Viejo. He's the younger brother of Sean Modster. Senior quarterback Coltin Gerhart has decided to leave Norco after his father, Todd, resigned as coach. He could be headed to Vista Murrieta.

Receivers Don'Yey Patterson (Compton Dominguez) and Jeremy McNichols (Lakewood) have transferred to Narbonne and Santa Margarita, respectively. Junior linebacker Matt Henderson and sophomore receiver Jesse Audelo went from Rosemead to L.A. Cathedral.

Upland has upgraded in a big way since the spring, adding junior quarterback Tyler Hilinski (Sherman Oaks Notre Dame) and running back Jake Payton (San Dimas).

And that's just a small glimpse of player movement. More transfers are coming.
