Offense takes step backward

UCLA’s woes on offense were focused on the Bruins’ quarterbacks Saturday after a 27-13 loss to Arizona.

The Bruins managed only 211 yards -- one week after rolling up 448 yards in a 45-26 loss to California.

“We thought we were moving in the right direction with the plays we made against Cal,” Coach Rick Neuheisel said. “But they weren’t being made today. I don’t know what the problem was, but it was a frustrating day for our offense.”

Neuheisel yanked quarterback Kevin Prince in favor of Kevin Craft, then yanked Craft for Richard Brehaut, who got one series near the end of the game.

In the aftermath, Prince took the blame.

“When I was in there, I wasn’t getting the ball to the right people,” Prince said. “I wasn’t doing it accurately. It all starts with me. I handle the ball every play. I have to make better decisions on throws.

“I didn’t perform today and it’s frustrating, because I know I can. I know can make those throws.”

Offensive coordinator Norm Chow wasn’t ready to make a permanent change.

“That is the worst thing that could happen is to have a deal like that,” Chow said. “Prince didn’t play well. I have never played with a freshman quarterback before. That’s the situation we’re in. Most kids get two years before they have to do this job.”

Dye job

UCLA’s only touchdown came on an alert play by safety Tony Dye.

Arizona quarterback Nick Foles threw a screen pass in the flat that was knocked down by linebacker Akeem Ayers. Referees ruled it a lateral, though no one seemed sure but Dye.

“I first picked up the ball just because, ‘Oh, the ball is right there,’ ” Dye said. “Then I looked all the way across the field and saw the referee starting to run so I thought, ‘OK, I’m going to run too.’ I raced into the end zone and he put his hands up and I thought, ‘Wow, this is really happening.’ ”
