Bob and Mike Bryan win Wimbledon men’s doubles title and earn another piece of history

Bob and Mike Bryan, the identical twins from Camarillo, won their 11th major tennis title Saturday, defeating eighth-seeded Robert Lindstedt of Sweden and Horia Tecau of Romania, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (2), in the Wimbledon men’s doubles final.

It was the second Wimbledon championship for the twins, who tied Australians Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde with 11 titles at Grand Slam-level events.

“This is as special as it gets,” Mike Bryan said. “To equal the Woodies, a team that we idolized, the greatest team in our mind, is unbelievable. To get their title record and get the Grand Slam record, I’m trying to figure out what’s left.”

Of the four major tournaments, Wimbledon has been particularly troublesome for the Bryans, who have won five Australian Opens, three U.S. Opens and one French Open. At Wimbledon they have advanced to the semifinals eight times and lost in the final three times, while winning only once, in 2006, before Saturday. And twice this year they needed to play five sets to advance.

“I’ll take these two,” Bob said. “Next year, we’ll go for three. But this is very sweet for us.”

“It was a tough week,” Mike said, noting that rain early in the tournament caused postponement of some of their matches and they ended up having to play four straight days to win.

“We were scrapping and clawing,” Mike said. “We were getting back from the courts at 10 at night, massaging, ice bathing and just waking up and coming right back out to the courts.”

There’s no immediate rest on the schedule either. From Wimbledon the top-ranked team in the world is flying to Austin, Texas, to help represent the U.S. against Spain in Davis Cup play Friday through next Sunday.
