Arrive early to bet often on Kentucky Derby Day at Hollywood Park
Hollywood Park gates will open at 7:30 a.m. for first race from Churchill Downs. It could be a nearly 12-hour day for those who stay for entire card at Inglewood track.
A horse player who wishes to be involved in the entire card from Churchill Downs and Hollywood Park’s program is in for a long day.
Gates at Hollywood Park will open at 7:30 a.m. Saturday for those who don’t want to miss a single race from Kentucky, where post time for the first race is 8 a.m. PDT. The live card in Inglewood kicks off at noon and the last of the 11 races is scheduled for a few minutes past 6 p.m.
The main event at Hollywood Park is the $100,000 Inglewood Handicap, a Grade III at 1 1/16 miles on the turf.
Get Funky, a lightly raced 5-year-old son of Straight Man, is the 119-pound high weight in the Inglewood, which will be run as the fifth race.
Owned by Keith Abrahams and trained by John Sadler, Get Funky will be making his first start since winning the Morvich Handicap on Oct. 27 at Santa Anita. A winner of five of 13, Get Funky will be looking for his first win around two turns over the Hollywood Park grass. He was second to The Tin Man in the Shoemaker last May 28 in his last local appearance. Michael Baze will ride.
Trainer Bobby Frankel, who has won the Inglewood twice since 2001, is scheduled to have three starters – Heroi Do Bafra, Hello Sunday and Storm Military – in today’s renewal.
Storm Military, the only member of the trio with a win this year, will be trying to rebound from a subpar performance on the Polytrack at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky. The Argentine-bred, who is one for one over the turf at Hollywood Park, finished seventh in the Commonwealth on April 12.
