HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL REPORT

Los Alamitos High’s Garrett is off to a quick start

The senior is impressive at the plate and on the mound.

After one full week of high school baseball, it’s clear that senior pitcher-outfielder Travis Garrett of Los Alamitos is one of the best unsigned players in the Southland.

Coach Mark Clabough said colleges have begun to focus on recruiting Garrett, who started the season with eight hits in 15 at-bats. He has struck out 13 in 6 1/3 innings.

Los Alamitos (6-1) has its best pitching staff in Clabough’s eight seasons as coach. The ace of the staff is Arizona-bound Kyle Simon. Left-hander Beau Wright, a junior who has committed to UC Irvine, is off to a 2-0 start with 10 strikeouts in nine innings.

The Griffins open Sunset League play Friday against visiting Fountain Valley.

There might not be a better junior pitcher in the Southland than Newhall Hart right-hander Trevor Bauer, who struck out 16 and given up only two hits in a 2-0 victory against West Torrance on Monday

He was flat-out filthy,” Coach Jim Ozella said. “He was overwhelming. Guys didn’t have a chance.”

Bauer is 3-0 with a 0.45 earned-run average and 29 strikeouts in 15 2/3 innings. And he thrives on pressure situations.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame won its first six games behind the hitting of senior Nik Rodarte, who’s 10 for 15 with four doubles and 10 runs batted in. Rodarte also has picked up three pitching victories, including a 2-0 win over La Canada St. Francis in a Mission League opener Tuesday.

Sophomore pitcher Eric Walbridge came through with an impressive complete-game 3-2 victory over Westlake Village Westlake, using 66 pitches to strike out eight with no walks.

When Orange Lutheran right-hander Gerrit Cole pitches, the scouts come out en masse and the opposing team celebrates when a batter doesn’t strike out.

Saturday, Cole struck out eight consecutive batters and finished with 14 in seven innings of Lutheran’s 1-0, 10-inning victory over Rancho Santa Margarita Tesoro.

He absolutely dominated,” Lutheran Coach Mike Grahovac said.

With close to 30 scouts watching, Cole’s fastball was clocked consistently between 94 and 96 mph.

Cole, who has signed with UCLA but figures to be a first-round draft choice, will next pitch in Lutheran’s Trinity League opener 7 p.m. Saturday against San Juan Capistrano JSerra at Hart Park in Orange.

Los Angeles Roosevelt left-hander Martin Villanueva is slowly getting back into shape. He struck out 13 and threw a no-hitter in a 5-0 victory over Garfield on Monday in an Eastern League opener.

Villanueva had signed a professional contract with the Mexican League in the fall that was later ruled invalid.
