NFL announces prime-time openers
The Giants will play host to the Redskins in the opening Thursday night game. The Colts will play the Bears in Indianapolis in the first game on Sunday night.
The NFL announced its prime-time schedule for opening weekend today, and the slate of games features three division rivalries and a rematch of Super Bowl XLI.
The New York Giants will face the Washington Redskins at the Meadowlands in NBC’s Thursday night opener, marking the fifth consecutive season the game has been hosted by the defending Super Bowl champion.
It’s worth noting the league passed on a chance to stage a rematch of a hard-fought divisional game between the Giants and Dallas Cowboys.
In the first NBC Sunday night game of the season, the Indianapolis Colts will inaugurate their new retractable-roof stadium against the Chicago Bears, in a rematch of their Super Bowl showdown.
The Monday night doubleheader features rivalries from the NFC North and AFC West, with Green Bay hosting Minnesota in the first game, and Denver playing at Oakland in the second. Both will be televised on ESPN.
