Lakers waive Jeremy Tyler, Keith Appling

On Monday, the Lakers waived forward/center Jeremy Tyler and point guard Keith Appling.

Tyler, a three-year veteran, made three preseason appearances with the team, averaging 2.7 points and 3.3 rebounds in just 9.3 minutes. He originally signed with the Lakers for $948,163.

Rookie Appling suffered a shoulder subluxation in his second exhibition game with the Lakers. Last week he received a platelet-rich plasma injection for treatment, but has been unable to play since the injury.

Appling was under contract for $507,336. In two games, he averaged just a point and an assist.

The Lakers’ roster is down to 17 players, with 13 guaranteed. Ronnie Price and Wayne Ellington need to make the regular season roster to have a portion of their minimum contracts locked in on Nov. 15.

The Lakers can keep up to 15 players -- at least two more will be cut.

Price has quickly become a valuable contributor for Coach Byron Scott, and appears to be a lock to make the team. Ellington has struggled to hit shots through the preseason, but with injuries to Nick Young (thumb) and Xavier Henry (knee, back), he may get a longer look as well.

Rookies Jabari Brown and Roscoe Smith have summer contracts, also at $507,336 each.

If a player on a summer contract (such as Appling) is waived after an injury, they receive just $6,000.

Price and Ellington have standard contracts. If either was hurt and subsequently cut from the roster, the Lakers would be responsible for their entire contract.

The team’s final roster decisions will need to come before the Lakers’ opener on Oct. 28, when they host the Houston Rockets at Staples Center.
