NBA conference call on Dwight Howard trade scheduled today

This isn’t a Chris Paul situation. Dwight Howard will be coming to the Lakers.

But the NBA still needs to do some housekeeping for the intricate trade involving the six-time All-Star center.

The NBA and the four involved teams -- the Lakers, Philadelphia, Denver and Orlando -- will hold a conference call at noon Eastern time (9 a.m. Pacific), according to a person familiar with the situation. Howard will officially become a member of the Lakers within a few hours of that.

The deal would only fall through in the unlikely event that one of the players fails a physical exam over the next few days.

The conference call is more of a formality than anything, a chance to make sure all the salaries work within the complicated NBA trade guidelines.

The Lakers get Howard, point guard Chris Duhon and seldom-used big man Earl Clark. Lakers center Andrew Bynum goes to Philadelphia, as does Orlando swingman Jason Richardson.

Philadelphia forward Andre Iguodala goes to Denver, while the Nuggets send Arron Afflalo and Al Harrington to Orlando.

The Lakers send a future first-round draft pick to Orlando as well. Additionally, there are draft picks from other teams and another player or two involved.

Howard, 26, is in the last year of a contract that pays him $19.4 million next season, but it makes more sense financially for him to wait until after next season and re-sign with the Lakers.

At that point, he can sign a five-year, $117.9-million contract, as opposed to a four-year, $87.6-million deal with another team.

Besides hoping Howard stays with them, the only other headache for the Lakers is a point guard-heavy roster: Steve Nash, Steve Blake, Darius Morris and Duhon.

Duhon, who turns 30 later this month, averaged 3.8 points and 2.4 assists in 19.5 minutes last season with the Magic. He has two more years and $7.5 million on his contract.

Clark, 24, averaged 2.7 points and 2.6 rebounds in limited playing time last season for Orlando. He has one more year for $1.2 million.

Neither Duhon nor Clark will be waived via the “amnesty” provision because traded players are immune from the rule, not to mention the deadline for next season already passed.

The Lakers are also believed to have parted with forward Christian Eyenga in the deal, sending him to Orlando. Eyenga came over from Cleveland with Ramon Sessions last March but played only four games with the Lakers.
