Joe Louis, Max Schmeling

BOXING June 22, 1938: Joe Louis defeats Max Schmeling In another chapter of America vs. Germany in the 1930s, Joe Louis avenged a loss to Max Schmeling with a devastating first-round victory at Yankee Stadium. Schmeling had beaten Louis by knockout just before the 1936 Olympic Games. Adolph Hitler told Schmeling to "win for the fatherland." Franklin D. Roosevelt told Louis that the U.S. "needed muscles like yours to beat Germany." Louis knocked Schmeling down three times in the first two minutes of their rematch and Schmeling's corner threw in the towel.
