Catcher John Roseboro of the Dodgers is attacked by Giants pitcher Juan Marichal, No. 27, as Sandy Koufax intervenes on Aug. 22, 1965, in Candlestick Park, San Francisco, in one of the more notorious clashes in baseball history. Marichal thought Roseboro's throws back to Koufax had flown too close to his head. As the batter and catcher argued, Marichal ended up hitting Roseboro's unprotected head with his bat. A 14-minute, bench-clearing brawl ensued. Marichal was ejected, suspended for nine days and fined $1,750.
