Oakland Athletics right-hander Chris Bassitt will need reconstructive Tommy John surgery on his injured pitching elbow.

Bassitt was examined in Cincinnati on Thursday by Dr. Timothy Kremchek, who determined Bassitt needs ulnar collateral ligament replacement surgery on his right elbow. The surgery is scheduled for Friday.

Bassitt was 0-2 with a 6.11 earned-run average in five starts with the A’s. He gave up a career-high seven runs and 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings last Thursday in Detroit and was placed on the disabled list the following day.

Cleveland Indians catcher Roberto Perez will have surgery on his fractured right thumb Friday. Perez was injured while tagging a runner at the plate Saturday against Philadelphia. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list the following day when X-rays revealed the fracture. Cleveland acquired Chris Gimenez from Texas for cash considerations Wednesday to back up Yan Gomes behind the plate.

Injured Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton will not resume his rehab assignment Saturday, the first day eligible since his stint with double-A Frisco was interrupted after one game. There is no set date or timetable for Hamilton to resume baseball activities.

Commissioner Rob Manfred says a decision is imminent on whether games between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Miami Marlins will be played in Puerto Rico this month. Manfred said Thursday the announcement on whether a two-game series will be moved because of concerns about the Zika virus will be made Friday or Monday “at the latest.”
