Houston Astros minor leaguer can’t seem to handle ESPN’s Jessica Mendoza in broadcast booth

Jessica Mendoza is a two-time Olympic medalist in softball who has become a groundbreaking baseball broadcaster.

Brooks Marlow is some prospect in the Houston Astros organization that most of us had never heard of until today.

And we’re not talking about him because of any baseball accomplishments. Instead, he’s the latest example of someone who can’t seem to handle the idea of a woman in the broadcast booth for a baseball game.

While Mendoza was doing her job for ESPN on Wednesday night during the National League wild-card game, Marlow decided to express his displeasure on Twitter. The infielder for the Class A Lancaster JetHawks tweeted: “No lady needs to be on espn talking during a baseball game specially Mendoza sorry.”

At least he said sorry.

Marlow soon deleted that tweet and posted a real apology: “I need to apologize for my tweet earlier regarding Jessica Mendoza. It was inappropriate, insensitive and does not reflect who I am.”

Marlow’s Twitter account now appears to have been deleted.

The Astros released this statement Wednesday night: “The Houston Astros do not condone the tweet posted by one of our minor league players earlier this evening. We have communicated with the player, who agreed that his tweet was inappropriate and insensitive and has since apologized. We also apologize to Ms. Mendoza, who is an outstanding broadcaster that we have had the pleasure of working with this season.”

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Mendoza has had to deal with such comments. Atlanta talk radio show host Mike Bell was suspended by his station last year after his Twitter rant against Mendoza, who became the first woman to work in a national broadcast booth for a Major League Baseball postseason game.

This year, she has been a full-time analyst for ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball.”
