Racing! Santa Anita talks progressing nicely

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we get ready for the start of the Kentucky Derby prep season next Saturday.

If you are worried about the seeming impasse between Santa Anita and the thoroughbred owners, Santa Anita boss Tim Ritvo is feeling good about things. In an interview with The Times, he said there seems to be agreement on the major issues but that they still have some work to do on smaller issues.

Ritvo cited stabling issues and overnight purses as issues on which there seems to be a consensus.

“I’m available seven days a week to talk,” Ritvo said, adding that he’s hoping for an agreement before the next CHRB meeting on Dec. 14 at Los Alamitos.

Ritvo stressed that the need to try different things is imperative.

“We believe the industry is stagnant,” he said. “We’re going to lay out some things that we need to try.”

Ritvo is making some changes at Santa Anita, and we’ll go more in depth on them in future newsletters. But his “ship and win” program seems to be bringing new stables into Southern California.

Adding a late pick five, even at the risk of cannibalizing the pick six, could be a smart move. One move that can’t be argued with is going to a $.50 trifecta (as long as it’s not straight).

“If I can get $20 million in the trifecta pool, then we’ve been successful,” Ritvo said.

Santa Anita opens, as if we actually need to tell anyone reading this newsletter, on Dec. 26.

TVG pickers update

As is our custom, let’s see how the TVG prognosticators did on Sunday. The answer: pretty well, even though it didn’t always result in wins.

Simon Bray and Dave Weaver each hit the late pick four at Los Alamitos. The high price was a $12.00 winner, Senator Robert, in the seventh. They both finished in the black. The $.50 ticket paid $131.85.

But I found the day of Matt Carothers, who I’ve always found to be a very smart handicapper, to be more interesting. TVG had him (forced?) to offer up the pick five at Aqueduct. Winner, winner, winner, winner, loss. And on a single.

They had him bet the late pick four at Aqueduct. Winner, winner, winner, loss. And on a single. They also had him bet the pick five at Gulfstream. Winner, winner, winner, winner, loss. Bet two horses in the last race.

What that adds up to is a loss of $106 despite fabulous handicapping, all because TVG wants their talent to bet multi-race exotics so people will stick around. Sigh.

Oh, by the way, the early pick five at Los Alamitos, picked by Bray was winner, winner, winner, winner, loss. And on a single.

Here are the totals:

--Weaver, betting Los Alamitos, won $107.85.

--Bray, betting Los Alamitos, won $89.95.

--Scott Hazelton, betting Fair Grounds, lost $8.

--Jeff Bratt, betting Woodbine, lost $12.

--Matt Dinerman betting Golden Gate, lost $18.

--Dawn Lupul, betting Woodbine, lost $24.

--Kimber Goodwin, betting Laurel Park, lost $24.

--Rich Perloff, betting Golden Gate, lost $36.

--Carothers, betting Aqueduct and Gulfstream, lost $106.

Los Alamitos review

Majestic Heat proved to be a real dirt horse, winning her second stakes in a row on this surface. She rallied strong in the stretch, passing Eclipse Award winner Champagne Room to win the Grade 2 $200,000 Bayakoa Stakes over 1 1/16 miles at Los Al.

“I had nominated her to the [Betty Grable at Del Mar on the dirt], so I decided to put her in there and see what happens,” winning trainer Richard Mandella said of her winning effort in that race. “We do that a lot and sometimes it doesn’t work, so we can’t brag too much. I thought she ran very well today. It gives us a lot of options for next year.’’

Majestic Heat won by a convincing 2 1/2 lengths over a game Champagne Room. Madame Stripes was fourth. Majestic Heat paid $8.00, $4.20 and $3.40.

Mike Smith was the jockey.

Los Al complaint

Subscriber Jack Nardi believes he isn’t being heard and he sounds like he has a point, so let’s hear what he has to say about Los Al’s simulcast product.

“Can you please tell the simulcast guy to turn down the loudspeakers. It’s so loud you can’t hear yourself think especially when we’re trying to handicap other tracks and they’re blasting Del Mar or Santa Anita replays. They also blast music between races, and the commentary by handicappers an hour before the races start is very loud and annoying in a simulcast arena.”

Agree or disagree? Let Los Al know.
