Racing! Ideas for helping victims of the San Luis Rey fires

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we come up with some new ideas.

Once again, thanks to all of you who have contributed to those affected by the San Luis Rey training center fire. It’s a veritable who’s who donating money to the gofundme (thoroughbred care) page.

I started to go through the list to see who was and wasn’t contributing and realized it was just a jerk move. The racing community is stepping up big, and many, many folks are contributing in ways that don’t show up on a gofundme page.

So, with that in mind, here’s an idea inspired by subscriber and horse owner Nick Palermino. How about if Santa Anita were to write conditions where there would be bonuses paid to San Luis Rey survivors? Sort of like the Cal-bred program.

And here’s another idea: How about a race of San Luis Rey survivors? I’m sure you can find a commonality of conditions to put together an eight-horse field. Then publicize it and say that all the takeout above what the average handle would be on that kind of race would be donated to help the victims.

You could encourage bettors to bet heavy and win or lose, they are contributing with a chance of getting a return.

Now, I know Santa Anita (and Del Mar and Los Al) are all doing what they can. And Santa Anita (i.e. Stronach Group) is having to pay all the freight to rebuild San Luis Rey. So, they are doing their best.

So, Tim, Keith, Rick, Pete, Amy, Nate, Mike, what do you think?

Holiday idea

Only a few days before racing (and I) go on a week sabbatical. So I’m hoping that for next Monday’s newsletter you can bring in the holiday spirit by sending ideas of gifts you would give horse racing people or organizations. You know, something like, “To TVG, I would give them a gift of a boss who doesn’t make them handicap pick fives.”

Send your ideas to me at johnacherwa@gmail.com and we’ll roll it out next Monday. Put “holiday gift” in the subject, and if you want your name used, make sure to include both your first and last name, unless you are Oprah or Beyonce.

TVG pickers update

As is our custom, we check in to see how the TVG handicappers did on Sunday. Two of them did pretty well. Dave Weaver gave everyone a $198.80 pick four winner at Los Alamitos. And the personable Matt Dinerman hit the pick five at Golden Gate for $154.70. Of course, they also did some other betting, brought their totals down.

Here are the numbers:

--Weaver, betting Los Al, won $153.80.

--Dinerman, betting Golden Gate, won $81.20.

--Jeff Bratt, betting Woodbine, lost $15.20.

--Dawn Lupul, betting Woodbine, lost $26.

--Stan Salter, betting Laurel, lost $32.

--Scott Hazelton, betting Aqueduct and Laurel, lost $44.60.

--Brad Free, betting Fair Grounds, Turf Paradise and Woodbine, lost $46.00.

--Simon Bray, betting Los Al, lost $54.00

--Matt Carothers, betting Aqueduct and Gulfstream, lost $99.00.

Los Alamitos review

Resky Business, (I know what you’re thinking, here’s the scene you want to see from the correctly spelled movie, just click here.) scored an easy 2 3/4-length win in a tepid feature of optional claimers over a mile.

Favorite La Force was second; Starr Of Quality was third. Resky Business paid $11.00, $3.80 and $2.80.

Big races review

A look at graded stakes or races worth more $100,000 or more on Sunday.

Woodbine: Grade 3 $125,000 Valedictory Stakes, 3 and up, 1 3/4 miles. Winner: Leavem in Malibu ($9.40 to win)

Final thought

Still looking to jump the circulation of this newsletter. Can’t beat the price. If you like it, tell someone. If you don’t like it, then you’re probably not reading this. Either way, send it to a friend and just have them click here and sign up. Remember, it’s free, and all we need is your email, nothing more.

Any thoughts, drop me an email at my new address johnacherwa@gmail.com or feed my ego by following me on Twitter @jcherwa

Until we return on Thursday, here’s the star of the show, Sunday’s results:

CARRIE'S SUCCESS settled off the rail then inside into and on the turn, came out in upper stretch, went around rivals then angled in a furlong out and rallied under left handed urging to get up late. Z Z TIGER had speed outside then inched away and angled in, set the pace inside, came off the rail into the stretch, drifted out a bit but inched away again in the drive and was caught nearing the wire. ALLIE'S LOVE stalked three deep to the stretch, bid outside the runner-up in upper stretch, fell back some nearing the eighth pole and bested the others. FUNNY BEAN chased between horses then outside a rival leaving the turn, swung four wide into the stretch and lacked the needed rally. SUPER PATRIOT stalked a bit off the rail, went outside a rival into the stretch and weakened. LA LA LAND close up stalking the pace between horses on the backstretch and turn, also weakened in the drive. GIRL DRAMA saved ground stalking the pace, continued inside in the stretch and had little left for the drive. SMOOTH AND SAVVY chased outside then three deep into the turn, fell back off the rail on the turn, came four wide into the stretch and lacked a further response.
