Racing! Just one day to go

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa, and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter and the end of this racing season. (I count Santa Anita as next season.)

It has been a while since we’ve played seven questions not about horse racing with someone known in racing. So how about today?

Our subject is trainer Dale Romans, a popular figure for his candor and humor. So here goes.

What is your favorite TV show that you are currently watching?

“60 Minutes.” I just like news and they’ve always put a good program together.

If you weren’t a trainer, what would you be?

I think a high school football coach. That was my second favorite sport. I’ve really only thought about being a trainer since I was 10.

What’s your all-time favorite movie or book?

“The Godfather.” Isn’t that everyone’s favorite movie? Then “Braveheart” and “Scent of a Woman.” As for a book, “The Fountainhead,” and everybody’s read “Catcher in the Rye” and “Outliers.”

If you could have lunch or dinner with anyone living or dead, who would that be?

I thought about this a lot. So, Bill Clinton.

What’s No. 1 on your bucket list?

Win the Kentucky Derby.

What’s your favorite food?

Pizza.

What’s your favorite kind of music?

I like classic rock. Led Zeppelin, the Who, that kind of stuff.

A must read

My friend Bryce Miller of the San Diego Union-Tribune, our sister paper, visited the charred remains of San Luis Rey Downs and spoke to some of the people who were there during that horrible afternoon. He came up with a gripping account that is a must read. (Read his story here.)

Los Alamitos review

Under a masterful ride by Mike Smith, Intimidate won the $100,000 King Glorious Stakes for Cal-bred 2-year-olds over a mile. It was the final stakes of the three week Los Alamitos meeting.

He fought gamely in the stretch to hold off and eventually draw away from Lucky Romano to win by 1¼ lengths. Campaigner was third.

“He got to pull himself up a little and was leaning in the stretch,” Smith said. “But I was able to straighten him out and he held them off.”

It was his first race on dirt and first time around two turns.

“I didn’t know if he could run a mile, I didn’t know if he could run on dirt, but I knew he can run,” said winning trainer Bob Hess Sr. “We had to find out and this looked like a pretty good spot.”

Intimidate paid $10.00, $6.40 and $4.40.

Los Alamitos preview

The final day of the Los Al meeting is unspectacular, but a mandatory payout with a pick-six carryover of $79,378 should make it more exciting. It’s a 10-race card, with a first post of noon. Five of the races are straight claimers, with the feature being a $48,000 allowance optional claimer for horses 3 and up over a mile.

The 2-1 favorite is Hot Sean, for trainer Bob Baffert. Most will be looking at his second last year in the $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot. But he has raced only once this year, a third in an allowance optional claimer.

The second favorite, at 5-2, is the veteran Stormin Monarcho for trainer Jeff Mullins. This will be his 55th start. He’s won 14 races. The Lieutenant is the third choice in the six-horse field.

SIXTH RACE: No. 6 The Lieutenant (7-2)

Bit off a bit more than he could chew in that last miler at Santa Anita but should drop into a nice stalking position in his first attempt over this track with Drayden Van Dyke and can make the last run count.

Saturday’s result: Sallyanna won by a length paying $4.80.

Mark Ratzky worked for 22 years for the Daily Racing Form and has been the simulcast announcer/publicity at Los Alamitos for the last 19 years.

He exits two strong trials when second and third respectively to Call Me Cole, fastest qualifier for tonight’s Los Alamitos Two Million. Colt gets reunited with leading rider Jesus Ayala, who guided him to victory three races back when beating Scoopie Jess, a two-time winner since.
